Me and my shadow....
Mar. 21st, 2020 04:52 pmMost of the time I don't think Mick and I are self-isolating, we are just staying in on a cold day and either catching up on jobs in the house, reading a book or watching something we managed to miss when it was first on. Then abruptly, something reminds you. Today it was Daniel, Mick's son, popping round to deliver some groceries he got for us while doing his own family shopping. Usually when this happens, he comes in for a brew and he and Mick have a chat. Today he pushed the door open, put the bag down in the hall and shouted to let us know he was there. We had just enough time to shout "Thank you" through the closing door. Later, at lunchtime, I found a message from a friend telling me that there will be an organised applause for NHS staff on Monday evening and urging us to join in at a window or on our front door step. I said to Mick "Nobody will hear us." We would need to walk down to our gate in order to be close enough to other people to be heard and what if we all get too close?
We've discussed what we would do if one of us became ill with The Virus. It would be possible to self-isolate even further by using different bedrooms and bathrooms, only going in the kitchen at an agreed time and, presumably, communicating via the internal phone - but it all sounds a bit miserable. May it never happen!
Of course, it is very easy to start all the present arrangements, once you have decided that there really is a threat out there and that Something Must Be Done (although it took our Government long enough to catch up with the rest of the world): what are the criteria for deciding when schools and businesses and transport can be opened up again? Will we still be under semi-house arrest at Christmas? Or this time next year? Does it have to wait until there are ZERO cases of the virus, or at least no recent deaths or something else altogether? I think it is all very convenient for the present Government to have a medical reason for postponing the local elections and preventing people meeting together, except in small groups,to talk about life, the universe and everything.
