Hatchings, matchings and dispatching
Aug. 27th, 2018 10:49 amSo far this year, my extended family (steps included) and friends has featured:
Two births (grandchildren, one girl, one boy)
Two deaths (of close longterm Lib Dem friends, both a little younger than Mick or me)
Two marriages (a niece on each side of the family)
Mick and I are currently in a tiny village in Somerset, after celebrating the first wedding on Saturday 25th August. My niece and her longterm partner, now her husband, have been developing an old farm with buildings and land to become a residential art school. This will include use as a wedding venue so - most appropriately, I think - theirs was the first wedding here.
The great advantage of living by the art school is that the indoor and outdoor space - including catering provision - can readily be adapted to facilitate big social events. There was an immense gathering of the clans, both family and friends, and the opportunity to get re-acquainted with lots of people I have not seen for ages (& acquainted with new people!) while we enjoyed feasts, fireworks, dancing and conversation, much of it outdoors, on a blissfully sunny day on Saturday followed by more feasting, games and conversation indoors during a rather wet Sunday.
Most guests left late Sunday or this morning, but as we do not have jobs to go to we decided to pass on the Bank Holiday train service and will go home tomorrow. We plan to explore the village and nearby gardens and find somewhere to buy lunch (local shop??) since the pub where we are staying is not serving lunch today but will be open for dinner.
We will go home for a day or two, enough time to mow the lawn and wash our clothes I guess, then on Saturday we will fly to Greece for the second wedding, of which more later. I am hoping to wear much the same party outfit to the second wedding but am a bit worried that the cream chiffon top may be contaminated with food and red wine due to simultaneous gesticulation, mastication and conversation.
Anyone who would like to attend a residential art course in beautiful countryside near the Quantock Hills is recommended to look at www.clayhillarts.co.uk.
